What is an enterocoele?
An enterocoele (enterocele) is when a woman’s small bowel protrudes into her vagina.
What causes enterocoele?
It can occur when the supports become stretched or damaged, mainly from childbirth and often after a hysterectomy.
What are the common symptoms of enterocoele?
Symptoms may include:
- aching in the pelvis
- vaginal discomfort
- back ache
- urinary and bowel problems.

What sort of treatment is recommended for enterocoele?
Treatment for enterocoele should be undertaken by a gynaecologist. It may either be surgical or conservative (non surgical).
Before any surgery is done, you should have a thorough investigation – including a Urodynamic Study – to ensure there are no other underlying conditions.
